This is the original sketch Horikoshi came up with. She's a high school student so this is rather unsettling, it's nothing new when it comes to BNHA characters. However, I'd like to talk about Mina's original design. I'd like to call your attention to the fact that her thighs are described as, "healthy" and yes, her acid power is explicitly mentioned as also dissolving her clothing. There's a lot of potential (which has so far been mainly explored in the fandom) for themes about how her literally alien appearance affects her life since it's been alluded to that heteromorphic quirks have a stigma. She's a character that gets sexualized to a great extent, both by the fandom and even by Horikoshi himself.

In many ways it reminds me of Star Trek TNG and how Counselor Troi getting a wardrobe change in the later seasons, wearing an actual uniform, turned her from a sex object to a respected figure.I emphatically disagree, try to stick with me here. I think that if the preliminary design is what was made final, it would've meant much better things for Mina, at least in the fandom. It much more closely reflects what an actual high school student would look like, quirk aside. The preliminary design is not as much eye candy, but it has a lot more originality and personality. The only change I really approve of is the horns becoming non-curved since obviously that's difficult to draw and animate.Still, I think this is a microcosm of how Mina has been done a disservice in the franchise. That is, way less sexualized than the final design.

Massive amounts of fanservice and little to no female development helps put that objectifying mindset into young men at an early age, and that's something that can absolutely stick with you if you don't have good female role models in your real life.Teen boys are horny little goblins, we shouldn't be telling them that women exist for sexual pleasure and nothing else. You say it's not a problem unless all stories objectify women, but at least in anime don't almost all popular shows do it? BHNA did it, Sword Art does it, one piece does it, Dragon Ball's numerous incarnations definitely did it, attack on titan is one of the only popular shows I can think of that doesn't objectify or sexualize its female characters.I don't find "well it's anime so you should pretty mich just expect women to be treated like sex objects" to be a very compelling argument. If you don't, it's not for you?But i've noticed a lot of the people who post here are into my little pony, so telling you to stick to your demographic probably comes off a little tone deaf. Our argument basically comes down to "ya-huh vs nu-uhh", so I don't think there's much mileage left in this conversation, but I'll say my last piece. The objectification of women in media is a problem because the media we consume (especially impressionable young men) shapes our view of the world and our behavior within it.It's harmful to have characters like Mineta running around because it's showing young boys that sexual harassment (particularly the lewd comments) is acceptable. It's almost like, young men, enjoy it? and. You will find sexualized depictions of women in stories aimed at young men, but not outside this demographic. Like i said, males are allowed to enjoy their own sexuality, it is not disgusting or immoral. To wit, it is not a problem for female characters to exist as sex objects within stories, those stories simply cater to younger men.The problem exists when the default position for ALL stories is "females exist to be sex objects", as a) there's no alternative to read if you're not into that, and b) it's a terrible message to program young people with.Say what you will about the manga industry, but i think there's a pretty obvious kind of demarcated zone when it comes to the content you can expect.

There is nothing wrong with appealing to it in your fantasy story. I see people trying to demonize male sexuality all the time. Parents should regulate the media their children are exposed to and be ready to contextualise the subject matter appropriately.Honestly, i'm fed up with people taking your position. However, that doesn't mean bnha has any onus whatsoever to edit or censor itself.
